Image
People are increasingly worried that powerful software will replace the need for human workers. Image: REUTERS/Rick Wilking 13 Apr 2017 Jonathan Vanian Writer, Fortune Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is preparing his country to deal with the challenges new technologies place on the workforce. The rise of artificial intelligence technologies has made it easier for companies like  Google  to automatically identify cats in photos. But as cutting-edge AI technologies amplify automation, people are increasingly worried that powerful software will replace the need for  human workers . Earlier this week, Trudeau  addressed  the subject of automation and labor on the question-and-answer website Quora and explained some of his ideas to help Canadian citizens keep their jobs in light of rapid technological advances. Trudeau concedes that the “job market is changing” but instead of “resisting in vain,” Canada is going to fu...

Google Android O Developer Preview

Image
By Max Eddy March 23, 2017 Google's freshly released Android O is the logical follow-up to Android 7.0 N(ougat), and brings a variety of subtle changes to the world's most popular mobile operating system. Android O is currently only available in a developer preview that anyone with a supporting device can install, but you're better off waiting until it's ready for prime time. Still, if you're brave enough, you can take a peek at what will be on (some) Android phones and tablets very soon. Going O-verboard Unless you're a developer, technology journalist, or a crazed hobbyist, there's no point in installing the OS right now. O is a developer preview, and getting it running requires you to download the OS from Google and manually install it on your Android device. It's not impossible, but it is a bit of a pain. It's also far from complete, and won't likely deliver a sterling experience. Google's own documentation warns "sys...

New Google tool helps developers pick the right colors for their apps

Image
Posted  Apr 6, 2017  by  Frederic Lardinois   ( @fredericl ) With its  Material Design guidelines , Google set out to create a unified set of ideas for how it wants developers to think about all the different aspects of their applications’ design, ranging from the basic layout to how to use animations effectively. As part of those guidelines, it also offered some ideas about how to  best use color . Today it’s expanding on that with the launch of a new color tool meant to help developers and designers pick the right color palettes for their apps. The  new tool  helps developers create and share color palettes, but, maybe most importantly, it also comes with the ability to then apply that color scheme to a sample user interface and to various Material Design  components  in  CodePen , a third-party “ playground ” for front-end web developers. Another interesting aspect of the new tool is that it au...
